Stockyard Inn Goes Vegan!

May 16, 2011

We ended the day with an evening celebration of the 25th anniversary of Hilda’s rescue. The vegan festivities were hosted by the Stockyard Inn, a steakhouse named after the infamous stockyard once adjacent to it. Moved by the event, the owners of this establishment will now be offering vegan entrees on their menu! Referring to vegan food, the restaurateur was quoted in the local newspaper: “This is a big thing... It's part of our future."

Lancaster Stockyards was once considered a pillar of the community, but in the 1980s, it was exposed, and became infamous, for mistreating animals. Our first rescue, Hilda the sheep, was removed from a pile of dead animals behind the stockyard in 1986 and lived with us for more than a decade. After years of investigations and campaigning, in 1993 Farm Sanctuary succeeded in convicting Lancaster Stockyards of cruelty to animals. In the following years, the stockyard fell into disrepair, and it has now been bulldozed. I am heartened to know that no animals will ever again suffer at the Lancaster Stockyards.
